Sometimes even the best writers hit a wall when it comes to making their work more interesting. This hurdle could be due to a number of factors including lack of inspiration, low energy levels, lack of focus, the writer’s environment, or the subject matter upon which the writer is working. So how do you keep your writing interesting and creative? It’s not always easy, and sometimes it will take a bit of effort to force yourself into a new situation to clear your writing rut, but it is possible.
Here are some ideas for adjusting your writing style, environment or other variables that might help you in becoming more proficient at making your work interesting.
1. Change of Scenery
Sometimes all it takes to get your creative juices flowing is a change of scenery. Whether this means a drive around town, a walk through the forest, going to a friend’s house, or biking around a lake, getting out of your usual surroundings can help to break up the monotony and give your writing a little more flavor.
2. Make Your Breaks Productive
When you take a break, it doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t be productive. Sometimes scanning websites, reading a magazine, newspaper, or book, or even watching the news or a certain television program can be great ways to clear your mind, give your brain time to recover, while at the same time continuing to learn and gather information that could make your writing more interesting.
3. Get Out
As a writer, you might find you spend a large portion of your day indoors, sometimes in the same building, even the same room. Making the effort to get up, leave your hovel, and get outside, even just for a couple of minutes to take in a little sun or fresh air, could be the change you need to gather inspiration and make your writing more creative.
4. Move Around
Sometimes our situations aren’t always conducive to getting outside. So if you can’t get out of the house or office, it might be a good idea to make an effort to get up and move around. Just getting up and stretching, doing some light calisthenics or whatever is needed to jolt your system and get your blood flowing, can make you feel better and give you that extra energy to boost your writing creativity.
5. Talk, but More Importantly, Listen
As human beings, we are born to communicate, but sometimes we talk when we should be listening. By listening to others, you can pull great experiences, stories, and tidbits of information from them in order to make your writing more interesting.
6. Don’t Limit Yourself
Sometimes we are afraid to explore our wildest ideas because we think they won’t work. But if you aren’t willing to take a chance occasionally, you won’t know if those ideas could be some of your best work. If you aren’t sure, you might want to write it anyway. You can always edit it out later.
7. Fix it Later
Spending minutes or longer fiddling with one sentence can slow you down and cause you to lose your train of thought or best ideas. There will likely be time to re-write and revise later. Get your thoughts down, then go back and fix mistakes, grammar, sentence structure, and add description later.
8. Find Your Writing Atmosphere
It is important to know what makes you work best and where you work well. Putting yourself in the atmosphere that is most conducive to your best writing can certainly help to make your work more interesting. This atmosphere might include the playing of music, having the television on in the background, sitting in a park, or relaxing in a coffee shop where you can people watch for inspiration.
9. Leave on a High Note
One of the best ways to be able to continue a creative streak in your writing is to leave off on a high note. Feeling good and being able to look forward to coming back to work can be a great way to keep your writing fresh and interesting as well as maintain motivation.
10. Multiple Projects
It’s easy to start projects, but not always so easy to follow through on them and keep focused on the goal ahead. Sometimes we tend to get bored with a single project when it is all we are working on. To keep your writing interesting, consider working on multiple projects at once. This way you can go back and forth between your works so that when you get bored with one, you can spend time on another for a while, and then go back for a fresh start on the other.
